Shivers takes shape from the phenomenon of trembling and jolting, sister manifestations of a single, profound agitation: an uncontrollable movement that emerges from a state of stillness, a psychic dimension intimately connected to the vital. What generates this agitation?

Even before words can define it, the body is permeated by it, becoming its medium and the choreography of its language.

Trembling and jolting resonate within emotion, understood in its etymological sense of “moving-with” (cum-movere). This resonance exceeds the human: it can be recognized in animals, in the quiver of the wind, or in the vibration of the sea before a storm.

The jolt, in particular, evokes a pervasive movement that seems to arise from deep within, like the subterranean shaking of an earthquake. It resembles those nocturnal dreams that rapidly surface into wakefulness, carrying with them fragments of an experience that transcends the everyday: a communication that comes from a deeper, older, and vaster layer of existence—an intrusive messenger.

The literary reference that inspired it is a short story by Anna Maria Ortese titled L’infanta sepolta.
